Protectors of God’s Word Part 2 of 3
Last month we found that the tribe of Levi, was appointed over the sanctuary and the protector of God’s Word. We want to see who God holds responsible today, more than anyone else. In Acts 15:1-2, we see men arose who taught that circumcision should continue to be taught. It caused quite a dissension in the church. So…they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. Then in verse 6, it says, "And the apostles and elders came Together for to consider of this matter." In the new testament, it was the leaders that were given the responsibility of protecting the Word.
In 2 Timothy 4:1-2, "I charge thee…Preach the word…" Paul gave Timothy a charge, a responsibility, to protect the truth. For Paul knew (13-14) that evil men would arise within the church teaching things that were not biblical. In Acts 20:28, the elders were told, "Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood." "To feed the church of God," they were being held responsible for what the were preaching and so are we toda.
We will not be able to defend ourselves in the judgment and say, "well that is what my preacher taught me." The Berea’s "…more noble…and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so (Acts 17:11)." We are responsible for what we believe is scriptural or not. More in next article.
